Killer Drivers: Are Our Roads Safe for Children Anymore?
One reason why I prefer my kids to take public transport. Even then we still need a Minority Report-style surveillance system.
I live in the suburbs, nowhere near a Grand Prix racetrack. Yet everyday I cross the road with my preschooler at a traffic junction, we are dodging cars that beat the red lights, Grab delivery and recreational bicycles, and a very high number of fast, motorised PMD drivers.
Here’s the sheer numbers of child-related road deaths in 2023 and 2024 alone:
Temasek JC student one of 2 killed in multi-vehicle Tampines accident
12 year old girl dies after getting hit by van in Taman Jurong; 23-year-old driver arrested
4-year old girl dies in River Valley road accident; woman driver arrested for careless driving
14-year old boy dies in Punggol after getting hit by car; jail for driver who beat red light
Mercedes driver in Tampines faces charges for dangerous driving causing death
Why We Need a ‘Minority Report’ Style Predictive Surveillance on Drivers
This may be the only instance I call for more surveillance, more of a Nanny state.
With predictive algorithms, we can easily detect the drivers who have shown a prior pattern of reckless driving, drink driving and road rage.
Demerit points alone are not a deterrent for anyone.
A better deterrent, cheaper than a months-long road safety PR campaign, would be personalised letters and calls from the Traffic Police to specific at-risk drivers who are more likely than the average driver to cause an accident due to recklessness.
Since they don’t put anyone’s lives uppermost in their mind, their freedom of movement (in this case, the freedom to drive a weaponized vehicle) should be severely restricted.
Call for Road Safety Improvements
If you are scared and concerned about the rash of fatal traffic accidents caused by killer drivers who simply don’t care about their rash driving, the drivers who won’t slow down in school zones, the drivers who have no care for people’s lives on the road, please go to Change.org to sign this petition, set up by a concerned citizen, to call for greater measures to improve road safety in Singapore.
Or, even more effectively, ask your friends and family to write to their MPs, and write to yours, about the need for greater measures in traffic safety in Singapore.
